Preface and Chapter One

Start reading.

In every child lies a dreamer, a spark of hope ignited by the belief in a brighter future. But what does this promise of tomorrow truly entail for a young mind? Is it merely a matter of education, hard work, or financial stability? Or is it something far deeper, a tapestry woven from values, integrity, and resilience?

As children navigate their journey on the path to realizing their dreams, they may not fully grasp the importance of the principles that underpin their aspirations. It’s not their burden to bear; rather, it is the profound responsibility of parents and guardians to instill these vital lessons. We must guide our children to understand that while a gray morning sky may loom overhead, it can transform into a vibrant blue with determination and effort. Hope is not a fleeting word; it is a powerful force that demands imagination and the courage to act upon it. This is a lesson that must be nurtured.

Reflecting on my own life, I recognize the immeasurable impact my parents had in shaping my identity. Their unwavering guidance filled my mind with ideas, principles, and the essential lesson of hope. In this book, I embark on a journey to share my story—a narrative that intertwines with theirs. Through my experiences, I aim to illuminate how hope can serve as a catalyst for change, inspiring us to work diligently towards a better world.

As you delve into these pages, I invite you to join me in exploring the transformative power of hope, the values we impart to our children, and the collective responsibility we share in shaping a future that reflects our highest aspirations. Together, let’s unlock the potential within ourselves and the generations to come.

Chapter One

The small city of Port-de-Paix is nestled in the northwest part of Haiti. It was there that I was born and given the name Marie Paule Vital. The vibrant colors of the market in Port-de-Paix, the sounds of vendors calling out their wares, and the scent of spices fill the air, creating a bustling atmosphere that was comforting in its chaos. My parents, however, hailed from the countryside, about twenty miles away, from a historic place called La Croix, St. Joseph. La Croix is rustic yet beautiful. It is the first place where my grandparents were well-known figures and where they raised their family prior to moving to Port-de-Paix. In a place where everyone knows each other by name, children understood the importance of respect; we addressed adults with titles like Mr., Mrs., Aunt, or Uncle – never by their first names. A child who dared make this mistake would face stern reprimands, for learning proper manners was a vital lesson from an early age.

I remember my grandmother’s voice ringing in my ears, “Marie, always show respect, for it is the foundation of our community.” It was a lesson hammered home through countless family gatherings, where politeness was not only encouraged but expected.

I can still see the long wooden table in our dining room, covered with a crisp red and white tablecloth, the smell of stewed chicken wafting through the air. Each child was taught to wait until the adults were seated, heads bowed in prayer, before the first bite was taken. During those moments, I would glance around, catching my cousins’ eyes, and we would share knowing smiles, not speaking but aware of the importance of these rules. It was a dance of tradition, one that bound us together as a family and as members of the broader community.
